Arsenal had lost 2-0 to Newcastle in November 2021, in a match that saw them struggle to create chances and ultimately fall short. The defeat had been a blow to Arsenal's confidence, and Arteta said that the players had been determined to make amends in the return fixture.

"We wanted to show that we're a better team than we were back then," Arteta said in his post-match press conference. "We were motivated by a sense of revenge, and I think that showed in our performance today."

From the outset, Arsenal looked like a team on a mission. They dominated possession and created numerous chances, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang opening the scoring after just six minutes. Aubameyang added a second goal in the second half, while Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe also found the back of the net. It was a convincing performance from Arsenal, and one that Arteta said showed the team's progress over the past few months. "We've been working hard on our game, and I think you can see that we're starting to gel as a team," he said. "We still have a lot of work to do, but I'm really pleased with the progress we're making."

Welcome boost for Arsenal:

The win over Newcastle was a welcome boost for Arsenal, who have had a mixed season so far. They currently sit in eighth place in the Premier League, and while a top-four finish looks unlikely, Arteta said that the team would continue to push for as high a finish as possible.
